Studying Sanskrit

'The study of Sanskrit creates orderlinesswithin the mind because Sanskrit is a highly systematic language, reflecting the orderliness of nature itself.'  Thomas Egenes

Prayer and Agni

I sat in a cafe today reading and waiting for my lunch.  As I read a paticularly harrowing passage I was quite off the idea of eating.  Then I read this; 'Prayers burning through despair.' and a light went on...

I often suggest to people who are under a lot of pressure, or whose minds seem to be in constant chatter that they try meditation.  Yesterday I asked a client if she had a practice for helping manage her anxiety around having lymphoma.  She said that she believed in God and that she prayed constantly.

Ayurveda is very concerned with the mind-body-spirit interaction.  Anything that happens in one will impact the others.  In this manner, for example, if someone is worried about something their digestion may be affected and they may not digest their food well as a consequence.  This may lead to the formation of ama (toxins) in the body, or to the disturbance of dosha.  The long-term consequence of this may be suppression of agni (the vital force or 'fire' of the body and tissues).  A lot of treatment is aimed at supporting agni... Healthy agni is the body's inherent health and healing power.

Our teachers tell us that body tissues selectively take whatever nutrition they need from what we give them.  Similarly, in Homoeopathy, a person will only react to any remedy they are susceptable to and will not react to any others.

Today it occured to me that prayer and meditation feed/fan agni.  The body will take from them what it needs, regardless of the form it takes. In this way, prayer/meditation support health/vitality and the body's innate ability to heal itself.  It helps us on our journey to wholeness.
